Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain name extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained working.
